Richy Roosa's Secret Language
If all art forms assign one to an effect, it is rational to consider that the performer has a clear involvement in this transfer. Though skills may be present it requires more to permit the inherent exchange. Although talent can permit one to execute a task well, evoking the unconscious in an observer or listener necessitates tapping beyond simple talent and skills. Poetry, music and art follow no preset rules when creativity engulfs one possessed by the instantaneous. Forecasting however a trait taught to keep one well organized, no where has this concept met so much resistance than in the world of abstract. This notion has been a fundamental tip in my father's Jean Claude Garoute's philosophy. "Si tu sais ce que tu fais, tu ne crées pas," which translates roughly to: "If you are aware of what you are doing you are far from creating. »
Creating in its accurate sense obeys no preset doctrine and follows no predisposing path. When fully immersed in the art of create one uncovers a direct access to inner psyche. Everything is new. Nothing is repeated. Limitless is the freedom accessed. If art is thought of having a purpose, then we should agree that it is dual fold. Great art affords an artist its pure expression of freedom unveiled. The end result if there is ever one in the mind of the true creator is the awakening in an observer a reaction simply base on not so much what he/she sees, but-in what his/her own competence allows. Abstract art removes the representational to eyes looking for what is routinely familiar and anticipated. Anyone not willing to do more than ‘look' will be left blind to all else very much present however-to be discovered.
Regardless which series one prefers to pause on in Richy Roosa's artistic repertoire it is undeniable-the man speaks well. There is more to this artist than being polyvalent. This discernible journey through abstraction suits him perfectly. In his pieces unravel a spirit of expression far from the hinting of tropical breezes, ocean hues and any ethnic affiliation. Yet, his art is very much authentic and pure to the source-rightfully his. This certainty is not made possible by the artist himself, but the power hidden in art enables Richy Roosa to not only be but ride fully the true appeal in abstract art.
The nineteenth century ended bringing new worth to the realm of painting which was prior very much figurative. Art for the most part was viewed as an invitation to depict. Not much was spoken of the fact due to the evidence. Why would one even go through the process of looking at an art piece if not to ‘see' an image? Thank goodness for the alteration in beliefs and viewers. Yet, it took artists breaking out of the mold, jumping beyond the traditional, crashing through restrictions to enable art to expand. The non-conformists in living their own awakening made it possible to experience observing a painting differently. Going beyond what is-see more-meeting art half way...
To me, the most important impact between artists and viewers is the understanding of the secret language spoken and heard. In my deep silence I have felt unfair to not having ever fallen in love with a painter. It would have been such pleasure making love to this man in public under the nose of all yet remaining absolutely discrete. An artist world is an opened book, an inviting one at that. But, as my father in his philosophy warns...you must know the script to engage in the conversation. An artist's world has a door. Although all doors are opened with a key, nonetheless one needs the ‘right' key to open a specific door.
This key proved to be valuable when a movement in France not only left the door opened but shifted the emphasis in the primary purpose of painting. Evoking feelings and emotions as opposed to ‘portray' unbolted more. Suddenly there were new avenues to explore. From creators and viewers a new perspective developed finding wings in excavating, expressing, creating, exhibiting, collaborating and-interacting. Abstract art is not a free for all to the take although the artist would have been pleased if all could benefit from the invitation. The original intent is a mere solo act. An observer truly seeping through his/her own consciousness meeting the artist half way in looking at a canvas or artistic installation is a plus. But, to a creator, his duty is to self-no one else. There can never be interaction if the witness is not equipped. Since visual abstraction displays no conventional reality to the naked eye seeing only what are. Color, texture, line and pattern...
As I carefully survey Richy Rossa's range, it is clear that he has in spite of growing up in a community where the depiction is edifying; he happily found his niche in the singular. Nothing about his art foretells a Dominican tropical soul, yet he is very much so. The realization supports the additional values in true artist. Universality comes with not the territory but the creator which ever location he/she happens to be. Creation needs no authorization or national identification card to grant access taping wellness inbred. Experiencing to the fullest any moment of creation just as in poetry and music...a visual artist opens an endless path to self expression. It is an ongoing process. The witness happens to see it partially contained at this time on a canvas, but the mind of a true artist is for ever creating. There is no living without this constant innate pull. Doing anything else allows an authentic artist to see in everything else-more. Being in touch with the unconscious part of their existence comes effortlessly to an artist.
Experiencing an unprecedented freedom through creation, Richy Rossa's pieces evoke unconscious feelings and emotions in an observer. Yet, let us not fool ourselves either, not just any observer will get his point. Just as the moon has been hanging freely overhead for generations, some with eyes wide opened finally saw it when the roof of the barn burnt down. Art is not that to the untrained or just opened eye. Abstraction demands more than eyes and time to decipher what is clearly right in front of you. It was not until the twentieth century that more artists understood that revealing what was below the surface of consciousness would not only feel good but alert observers of their own dormant awareness. The concept exposed the fact that although eyes are seeing, they are mere tools. The facility to infiltrate beyond what the art piece depicted required more than eyes. It enabled one to process more when preconception does not find an observer in a-nothingness state.
Bypassing the literal is not easy when one facing an art work behind an impassable stand of comatose emotion. In the world of abstract, the benefit of an eye opened disregarding any additional factor could prove costly-missing out completely. The more abstract a work of art, the less preconceptions it evokes in the mind of the beholder.
In the archives responsible for the history of art, many new chapters were added since abstract art entered the visual arena. And-what wellness this variety brought to mainstream art! The unconscious has found a voice in the hands of artists not scared to veer off norm. A group of men in France untied the restrictive knots permitting painters to drift from their representative line and blossom. Yes, blossom to a more abstract yet very much authentic work of art. I always wondered if human life subsists unconsciously and dwells below the shell of perception and evolves outside purposeful thinking, why would expressing this singular truth be contained, formatted and prescribed guidelines.
A skillful master expressing well through abstract art speaks much. Are we the observers competent to listen too as opposed to only-seeing? Whatever the feedback to follow, it is certain that an artist's art piece is an already done deal, a poem written, a piece of music performed. Approval is not a true artist's concern. However, when the self revealed shifts into public submission, without the assistance of the observer it is a monologue. When a witness' preparedness meets the artist half way, art then grows to be a more than a significant tool. Art provides unconsciousness an interactive platform- unexplained. If art grants one the facility to express the unseen, where is the beauty in having to explain an art piece to a viewer? The interaction between art and observers ought not to become a lesson, but a celebration. Art is simply a manifestation of self.
How does one describe in words what has no beginning and no end? How one would dare unravel at first glance and without inner maturity a realm not familiar? Abstract art even to the trained eyes may not ignite a reaction if and when one's natural receptors are not defaulted. Having the ability to be in the mental state enabling one to listen instead of just hearing is a must to share the vision of an abstract artist. Those sharing Kandinsky's practice removing whatever influence expectations bring forth experimenting liberty away from rituals. On this factor many other abstract movements were established, thus explicitly contradicting the very basic on which a majority supporting art functioned. If art does not suppress, how then would the art of creation confines? If creativity ever needed a pretext to delete expectancy, the Pollock's phase branded ‘action painting' proved the point reiterating the notion. Art has long moved away from the decorative connotation. No longer is creating exploited for the sole purpose of illustrating of idea, a preserving image or partially tell a story. Creating allows a natural adventure involving if you allow me the analogy...the doer, the clairvoyant and the art work.
The artist manifests. The piece is. We- onlookers do the rest.
Through observing the piece reveals a more direct and less restrained conduit to maneuver unconsciousness. The approach is universal, yet-a certain sense of individual authorization must be present. We all can do it to some degree, although most of the time we are unaware of what we are doing. Freedom of expression does not only permit an artist to dig out, the viewer must freefall into the experience to access liberty beyond frontier to also apprehend the involvement. Yes, it is unambiguous. Art is an obvious one to one invitation to participation. By the virtues hidden in freedom of creation an art piece is not subjected to a viewer point of view to exist. Moreover any interaction missed upon renders the artist blameless. The cycle is complete if a viewer combines forces with the artist, but the end result is not necessary to validate creation. We also must agree that one can't combine what is not at hand.
The solo process now a painting tapping in one's unconscious provokes another singly process in a watcher. Unless the observer clears off the conscious of all preconceptions in order to be influenced by what is nothing productive will occur. What now is exposed is a genuine offer from within. Any observer willing to let self go, abandoning all into the hands of the artist becomes more receptive which in turn enables the art work to take you the witness wherever it wants. The collaboration falls short often given that humans are too concerned with pattern seeking and pattern creating.
Richy Roosa's tapping into the untamed and unreasonable forces gives life and definition to what it means to be human. His art personifies the territory however deviating from the norm. His art is very much at ease where he dwells. Location does not make an artist, creating does. Location does not portray the creator. His art does. Freedom of spirit has a cost. Being responsible for self is the exchange. Art is encompassing however singular the act of creating. I doubt that this particular Dominican artist is that familiar with Tad Bonieki, yet in his obvious multidimensional gathering exhibited online exhibit, I could not help think that Richy Roosa has crashed through territorial obstacles in producing pieces ahead of his time. Well versed in the language of freedom through the art of expression. His art pieces speak loud and clear. I am grateful for the opportunity not only to enjoy the visual conversation with Richy Roosa at a distance, but-sharing the dialogue with others is as important.
